World Forest Day

Let us redeem our pledge to…

We celebrate World Forest Day but the sad fact is that our forest cover is decreasing day by day. The wild animals have been rushing into the urban habitations. This has led to the increasing conflict of humans with the wild animals. The destruction of forest is due only to human greed and arrogance. If only humans realize that the destruction of forests will lead on to destruction of humanity, the forests will survive. The greenery of the forest will be the breath of the human habitations. When will this happen? This is our present predicament!

Agriculture and environment are the two faces of the same coin. The one cannot survive without the other. But unfortunately both these facets are under fire. Excessive human greed and the decreasing work-culture among the humans is causing such an awful destruction. In spite of this awareness we have been recklessly destroying the rich forests of our Western Ghats. The wild life is under threat of extinction.

The nude sight of the once lush green and luxuriant forests presents a horrible scene. The lovely descriptions of the greenery of the forests have become the legends of the past.
The tribal people had always been facilitating the sustenance of wild life. But in recent years, they too have been influenced by the modern style of living and have been causing destruction. It is high time that the right thinking persons and the Governments should strive to put an end to such suicidal tendencies. We have to educate people. We have to preserve our forest wealth and pave way for the natural renewal and regeneration processes. We may have to construct Dams, and establish hydro-electric projects and these we should do without causing destruction. The policies relating to the management of forest projects should be based on scientific approaches. The reports recommending the banning of the deadly environmental projects have been silent on prescribing the alternative options and schedules. Insistence on seeking the Governmental permission will only result in corruptive practices. The Rivers-turn projects are certainly dangerous as they are unnatural processes. The protection of marine-life is absolutely necessary for the sustenance of health food-chain system. We have to save and preserve our rich forests and make them grow and that should be our urgent tryst with destiny and we should redeem our pledge to protect and develop our forests, on the observance of the World Forest Day.
